The Only Michael - musical journeys
1994-1996: Resolution - My first venture into the
world of electronic music was an EP produced in collaboration with
Intens (Colin Newman and Malka Spigel) and released on their Swim
label. This then led to solo pieces on the Mesmer LP and Mesmer
Variations CD (also featuring Drome, Gescom, Ryoji Ikeda etc) and a
track on the Wire tribute album Whore (also featuring My Bloody
Valentine, Lush, Scanner etc).
1997-2001: Feeler - After moving from London to Brighton, I formed the band Feeler with vocalist Lisa Palmer. We had tracks released on the Confrontation in Dub and Solar Spectrums compilation albums and were described in the music press as 'a lush, ambient outfit with gorgeous vocals' and 'the bastard daughter of spiritualized and dj shadow', among other things.
2001-2004: Sundaze - Finding myself in Sheffield,
I soon began falling in with the Sundaze collective and performed
with them as a DJ and live musician at the Big Chill festivals, as
well as at festivals in Portugal and Austria, and bars, clubs,
galleries and cinemas in the UK.
2004 to present: Animat - Out of this has come an established recording and live film soundtracking project in partnership with fellow DJ and producer Mark Daly and other occasional collaborators - see the Animat website for the latest news on releases and upcoming live dates. Our collaboration with the Third Half has mutated into an ongoing partnership between myself and Peter Rophone – look out for news of an album release during 2016.
Over the past 10 years I have been working on collaborative
projects with a number of poets and writers in Sheffield and
elsewhere - see Collaborations for more information.
In a previous life, I was the main songwriter, co-vocalist and multi-instrumentalist in cult independent band 1000 Mexicans, now re-animated for the 21st century - see here for more information.I also play guitar, bass, melodica and other bits and pieces with Sheffield alt.country outfit Jackalope Tales.
